Membership benchmarking – Resolution
Resolution is a leading membership organisation for family justice professionals, doing vital work to improve the experience of families and children going through separation. Through its influential Code of Practice, campaigning, professional development and practitioner support, Resolution champions a more constructive approach to family law while helping to raise standards across the profession.
Building on a research partnership spanning more than a decade, Membership Matters was delighted to work with Resolution again. This latest programme built on our previous research and established member personas, exploring how the membership, its priorities and perceptions of value had evolved over time.

Membership challenge
Resolution wanted to understand how its membership had changed over time and how their motivations, expectations and perceptions of value compared with previous research.
Building on a research partnership spanning more than a decade, we used our previous work with Resolution as a benchmark to identify changing member priorities, behaviours and needs, and provide evidence to support future engagement and retention.
What we did
We delivered a comprehensive benchmarking programme, generating over 1,800 responses and comparing the findings with Resolution’s previous research.
We explored changes in why members join, what they value, organisational priorities, reasons for leaving and perceptions of the Code of Practice. Building on the personas we had previously developed for Resolution, we revisited, updated and refined the personas, bringing them to life with fresh insight into members’ evolving needs, motivations and behaviours.
The findings were brought together into clear strategic recommendations to help Resolution strengthen member value and inform future decision-making.
Impact
This work delivered:
- 1,800+ research responses, nearly double the 2019 response
- Robust benchmarking of member attitudes and behaviours over time
- Clear evidence of changing member priorities and perceptions of value
- Refreshed and refined member personas, grounded in the latest research
- Greater understanding of the drivers of engagement and retention
- Strategic recommendations to strengthen the future membership offer
Resolution now has a clear evidence base for understanding what has changed, what continues to matter and where action is needed. The research has since helped inform Resolution’s strategic direction and short-, medium- and long-term planning, with the findings continuing to shape how it develops its membership offer and support for members.
Complete focus on delivering the goals we have set and have helped us to achieve so much more than we thought we could. All this and a warm sense of humour too.
